Prior to the G League Ignite’s season start, forward Ron Holland was widely looked at as a player who had the best chance at going No. 1 overall.
It was far from an expert consensus, but with a No. 2 RSCI ranking and plenty of eye-popping moments to back it up, Holland was a sure bet to succeed at most levels of basketball.
Then, inefficiency and turnovers marred the beginning of his G League career, causing his stock to drop some while players like Alex Sarr, Nikola Topic, Zaccharie Risacher and more surged forward.
But over the last few weeks, Holland has re-inserted himself into conversations with much-improved play.
It started with a bout versus Rip City in which he scored a blistering 31 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
Against the OKC Blue he scored 25 points and added six rebounds. And in his last contest versus the Iowa Wolves, he poured on 26 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and three steals.
There’s still been some inefficiency, but a more refined NBA role that brings a more clear-cut shot diet and less passing creativity will do wonders for his overall game.
On the season, Holland has now boosted his overall stats to 20.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals with 45% shooting overall. His 24% 3-point shooting and 2.9 turnovers per game still stand out, but much less so with the total production.
Holland may not have worked himself back fully to No. 1, but he’s certainly trending in the right direction.
