AHMEDABAD: Bowling coach Paras Mhambrey lauded India’s bowling unit, commending them for their effort and commitment after India were outplayed by Australiain the final. “One game doesn’t take the credit away from these guys. If you look at the last six-seven months, the way these guys have played, not only the Asia Cup, the build up to the Asia Cup…it’s been exceptional. I can’t fault them for their effort and commitment,” said Mhambrey.
“It’s been a very challenging last couple of years. Obviously, Bumrah missed a major part of it (because of injury). You can see the difference he brings to the side. But his absence gave us opportunity to work on other options, like Mukesh (Kumar), Prasidh (Krishna) and Kuldeep (Sen). These are the guys we could give an opportunity to get a game. I would look at it that way. It’s been fruitful.”
Singling out Mohammed Shami, who ended with 24 wickets from seven matches, Mhambrey said, “He’s been incredible. The way he played after not being included in the first few games, the way he bowled, it was incredible. His impact is phenomenal.
” With India set to play seven Tests — two against South Africa and five against England — over the next four months , the 51-year-old said that the emphasis would be on workload management of pace bowlers. “We will have to be very smart g o i n g f o r w a r d . Bumrah and the others have had a lot of workload over the last six months. T hese guys have played a lot of cricket. We have to be very smart in the way we go forward, managing the workload, and that is something we will look into.
“There is definitely a lot of potential in the second line of bowlers. We have seen the bench strength we have in the West Indies,” he said.
