The gambling dens deal with multiple forms of illegal gambling – from online lottery and Kolkata fatafat games on Whatsapp to satta and other illegal lottery games, some of which are even run on the backdrop of shacks selling government lottery tickets.
A senior officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate’s detective department said in the last six months, they have made arrests with seizure of large amounts of cash and other instruments from around Baguiati auto stand. Fifteen others were arrested from other parts of Baguiati during this period.
“There has been a sudden increase in gambling dens over the last few months, but we are constantly raiding and prosecuting them, acting on source information,” said the officer.
On Saturday, four persons were arrested from an illegal shop near Baguiati auto stand for gambling. Cops said Gourab Bhattacharya, alias Bunty, used to run the shop. He along with three others – Sanjay Das (58), Rabi Poddar (28) and Swarup Das (29) were arrested. Another den at Lohapol in New Town was also busted on Saturday and Santanu Mondal (22), Ajay Mondal (22) and Pritish Mondal (20) were arrested. Several CPUs, monitors, printer and cash were seized from them. Cops said they booked the men under section 294 A of IPC (keeping illegal lottery office) and section 3/4 West Bengal Gambling and Prize Competition Act.
TOI visited the site on Sunday and spoke to local auto drivers, many of whom claimed to have lost money worth several thousand in the last few months.
