RANGERS may have identified the solution to their left-back problem.

But they will have to fend off competition from Serie A for his signature, a report suggests.

The Light Blues are in the market for a left-back with Ridvan Yilmaz on the verge of leaving the club and Borna Barisic in the final year of his contract.

Efforts to sign Josh Doig came to nothing as the former Hibs ace swapped Hellas Verona for Sassuolo last week.

And SunSport understands the Ibrox club are not pursuing Twente Enschede star Gijs Smal.

Philippe Clement is desperate for a new left-sided defender this window as Gers look to ship out Yilmaz and generate cash.

But he won’t be allowed to leave until a replacement is found as otherwise the only realistic option at the position would be Barisic.

Both Adam Devine and Ben Davies could operate at left-back but neither are naturals in the position.

However, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Rangers have identified Ajax starlet Anass Salah-Eddine as a target before the window closes.

Salah-Eddine, 22, made his Ajax debut in the 2020-21 season but has since played mostly for Jong Ajax in the Dutch second tier.

He was loaned to Twente for the 2022-23 season (incidentally as a rotational option behind Smal) and played 14 times in the Eredivisie.

Salah-Eddine has been a regular at youth level for the Netherlands, with seven caps for the under-21s in 2023 and he was part of the under-17 squad that won the Euros in 2019.

He has played nine times for the Ajax first team this season, registering one assist, including brief outings in the Europa League as a sub.

The player has shown versatility this season too, playing in a central midfield role more often than not when in action for Jong Ajax.

He’s rated at just under £800,000 on Transfermarkt but that value will surely increase as he racks up more minutes and gains experience.

According to Romano, Ajax are open to loaning the player out for the remainder of the season and several clubs are on the radar.

But Rangers and Italian side Torino have been explicitly mentioned as interested parties.

Gers and Ajax have of course done business before recently, with Calvin Bassey going to the Dutch giants from Ibrox.
