A man has been arrested after “multiple” hostages were taken at a popular nightclub in the Netherlands.

Police surrounded the venue on the morning of March 30, as four people were being held hostage inside Cafe Petticote in the Dutch town of Ede.

After several hours, at around 11.20am, three of the hostages – believed to be employees of the nightclub – were seen fleeing the building with their hands above their heads. The final hostage was set free approximately an hour later.

One man wearing a balaclava walked out of the venue shortly afterwards, holding his hands in the air, before being ordered by armed police to kneel. Officers handcuffed and blindfolded him before leading him into a police car.

Police said in a statement: “We notice that there are many questions about the reason. At this time there is no indication of a terrorist motive.”
