Former world No 1 Jimmy Connors thinks extremely highly of Iga Swiatek as he admits he would like to meet the three-time Grand Slam champion. Connors, a former eight-time Grand Slam champion, believes 21-year-old Swiatek has already proved that she is capable of handling well adversity and coming out on top.
After a disappointing Australian Open, Swiatek returned to action during this past Middle East as she made it all the way in Doha and finished as runner-up in Dubai. “It seems to me that you know there are certain players that when bad things happen, you know, they know what it takes to overcome that adversity and to figure out why that happened.
I wish I could meet her. I’d love to meet her, you know love to have her on the podcast. It would be great,” Connors said on the Advantage Connors podcast, per Sportskeeda.
Connors, Barbora Krejcikova think very highly of Swiatek
This past Saturday, former world No 2 Krejcikova prevented Swiatek from winning back-to-back titles in Doha and Dubai.
In the Dubai final, 2021 French Open champion Krejcikova pulled off an upset as she defeated top-seeded Swiatek 6-4 6-2. After the final, Krejcikova called Swiatek “a big inspiration” and noted there is something that everyone can learn from the Pole.
“It definitely means a lot. It was a great week for me, I was improving every single game & today I showed my best. I have so much respect for Iga, to me she is a big inspiration, she motivates me every day. It was a great final & I’m happy with the result,” Krejcikova said of Swiatek.
Meanwhile, Swiatek is now turning her focus on Indian Wells. Last year, Swiatek went unbeaten during the Sunshine Double as she won titles in Indian Wells and Miami. The Indian Wells event is kicking off on March 8th and it remains to be seen if Swiatek can defend her title in the desert.
