JAIPUR: Isharani Baruah and women’s doubles combination K Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam reigned supreme at the FZ Forza Dutch International Series Badminton tournament which concluded in Wateringen, Netherlands on Sunday.
Isharani stopped her Indian counterpart Devika Sihag from completing the hat-trick of titles in Europe by claiming the women’s singles crown.Devika, who won the Swedish Open and Portugal Open this season, was on the verge of pocketing her third successive titles.
In an all-Indian summit clash, 18-year-old Devika squandered away three match points to go down fighting against second seed Isharani.
World No. 97 Isharani rallied back strongly to register a thrilling 19-21, 23-21, 21-14 victory in an hour-long battle between the two trainees of Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy.
After losing the first game narrowly, Isharani was struggling in the second game too but saved three match points to force the decider.
In the deciding third game, Isharani dominated to thwart her younger rival. It was so close yet so far for in-form Haryana teenager Devika, ranked 148 in the world.
Unseeded Devika had knocked out fourth seed Irina Amalie Andersen of Denmark and top seed Rachel Chan of Canada in the quarter-final and semi-finals, respectively. But she failed to clear the final hurdle against her regular practice partner Isharani.
Assam girl Isharani had smooth sailing in the tournament and ousted seventh seed Freya Redfearn of England in the quarters.
Top seed Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam wrapped up a memorable day for India with the women’s doubles title.
Former national champions Ashwini and Shikha made the light work of Denmark pair Anna-Sofie Nielsen and Mette Werge with a thumping 21-18, 21-14 win in the final. World No. 53 Karnataka duo Ashwini and Shikha did not lose a single game throughout the competition.
